quote The McCain campaign is hoping to have 15,000 people at the Ohio rally — roughly five times the size of his largest crowd to date.

Poor McCain. He just can’t get anybody excited. His largest crowd to date is about 1.5% the size of Obama’s largest crowd. While the ability to pack stadiums isn’t a real qualification for President, Obama has managed to engage more people and get more people excited about politics and about what they can do to influence their country. This is critical for the future of democracy.

The low turn out and low enthusiasm works well if the task of governing is something left to a few Washington insiders—but a functioning democracy requires…well…dêmos. The crowds are a good thing.
